CLASSICAL MEZZO-SOPRANO | MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMER | ACTOR

About

MikkiSunglasses.jpg

As a nod to the younger members of the audience, Mikki Sodergren delivered the familiar…Disney song, “Let it Go” from the movie Frozen. Sodergren is listed in the program as a soprano, but in this song, her warm overtones suggest a mezzo-soprano with a high range... her “To Keep My Love Alive” was her best offering of the night. The character she played in that number bragged of having numerous husbands, but never was divorced. Playing against “type” with her angelic face, the devilishly clever miss “bumped them off”.

- Susan Myrill Dougherty, The Westfield Leader

Mezzo-soprano Mikki Sodergren has created a niche for herself as a performer who can effortlessly glide between genres. As the 2014 winner of the American Traditions Vocal Competition in Savannah, Georgia, she took home not only the Gold Medal, but also awards for Best Johnny Mercer Song Interpretation and Best Jazz Performance.

With a specific passion and joy for symphonic engagements, Sodergren has performed with the Jacksonville Symphony, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Savannah Philharmonic, the New Jersey Festival Orchestra, and the chamber orchestras of New York and Tel Aviv, Israel.  Concert engagements have ranged from Pops programs, to major oratorio works, and world premieres.

No stranger to the theatrical stage, she has starred in Amarillo Opera’s The Man of La Mancha (opposite legendary screen and stage star Ron Raines and Broadway veteran Michael Farina), and as Eponine (Les Miserables), where she was lauded as having “brought that essential earthiness and longing [to the role]”(Amarillo Globe News).

A strong supporter of new work, Mikki has had the opportunity to create memorable roles in shows such as Kerrigan & Lowdermilk’s The Bad Years, the award-winning short musical The Bystander by Eric Grunin and Ed Levy, and Looking at You, a technological opera by composer Kamala Sankaram.

Her work in film has been tied to music, starring as Sarah in The Parksville Murders, Ep. 1, an award-winning short opera, written specifically for virtual reality film (again by Sankaram) and librettist Jerre Dye. Additionally, she portrayed the Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson in a special performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and was also featured in the award-winning short film, Connection Lost: l’Opera di Tinder.

Mikki enjoys ensemble work immensely, and frequently performs with the Manhattan Chorale, the Grammy®-nominated Clarion Choir, and recently toured to Ecuador and Cuba with the ensemble of The Americas Society, Meridionalís.

Upcoming engagements include two tours with the Clarion Choir, with such collaborative partners as The English Concert, The Orchestra of St. Luke’s and The Kansas City Chorale. Mikki will make her debut with the Johnstown Symphony, and will enjoy return performances with the Tallahassee Symphony and the Savannah Philharmonic.

Sodergren enjoys giving back to the musical community, and has taken on the role of Artistic Director for the American Traditions Vocal Competition in Savannah, Georgia. She hopes to use this platform to educate future generations not only on the breadth of styles present in American music, but how being a stylistically versatile singer can help young performers craft a rewarding and viable professional career.

Mikki resides in Manhattan with her beloved cat, Djibouti.
